And lots more I can't recall off the top of my head, since I last played it many years ago. It seemed designed to prevent frivolous resting, but the game decisions didn't make sense with it. And I found myself at a point in the game where my hunger was growing, yet I would die if I ventured out to find spirits to feed on - so I died. One of the strongest links between the two games is the fact that is a personal story. SHITTY. Think of Mask's peers: big CRPGs like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, The Witcher, the Infinity Engine games, and Neverwinter Nights 2 (duh). Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer Walkthrough. It seems as if games that strive to have a personal story always ends up with this problem. Edit: If you are down PM me or join my Mumble: ca1.mumblevoice.com Port: 64863. I am new to Neverwinter Nights 2, and would love some help with character creation. I had the same challenge with Pillars of Eternity (lost interest in the plot and characters and stopped playing ~40% through), and have yet to start PoE II. Maybe people thought it was good because it came out in the middle of an RPG drought and there wasn't much competition. The only way out was to backtrack about three hours of my savegames and try to find a different route. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. It also does something very few RPGs do - Connecting the story and your choices within it into more than just cutscenes, but into actual game-play. I think you're overstating what the campaign does by a fair bit. It's personal. Link http://au.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/neverwinternights2maskofthebetrayer/cheats.html. But I wasn't. It's just not for you, then. Compare the OC companions to MOTB. I'm playing it again after some years partly out of boredom and partly to give it another chance after having played the main NWN2 campaign again, but I'm not seeing the appeal. It is not a story about an ancient artifact or a kingdom at war - It is a story about your character and because of how it lets you shape the character to your liking, it becomes YOUR story. The ending really brought to my mind the ending of Monty Python and the Holy Grail :(. Yes, I get the point, it's Mask of the Betrayer and it has to do with some sort of mask, both figurative and literal. And you cant … Why are people in love with things that are dark and being hated and being a monster? It's the narrator's voice tbh. EXPLORE. It's dark, but it's also a white-knuckled fight for agency, which is pretty cool. MOTB i'd rank as being my second favorite expansion pack (HOTU being the first), its only real fallacy being the curse system. Expansion pack Mask of the Betrayer picks up from the moment D&D-loyal RPG NWN2 finished, with the King of Shadows defeated, and your character squished beneath … It promises a 25-hour adventure. Whenever storylines start involving "souls", and metaphysical elements, I just start losing interest for some reason. Permanently. However the story is a very personal one about your character - If you didn't play through NWN2 with it, I feel it will lose a lot of it's impact since you don't have a connection with your character as much as you would had you played the OC with it first. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of The Betrayer; Game endings *SPOILERS* User Info: t1con. Simply click any of the links within the navigation bar to the right and you will be brought to the respective area. I still didn't enjoy MotB much since you don't gain much more power than you start with, relatively speaking, and the companions put me to sleep. I'm sure some purists will cry foul at the thought of starting almost at Epic-level, but there's so much to experience in an Epic-tier D&D adventure that its literally a completely different playstyle and world you're seeing. Even through its transition phase between bioware and obsidian (I kinda think obsidian nailed single player little better than bioware); however, I never got the real chance to play NWN 2 online. The animations are horrendous in general, parries and blocks aren't animated (even in parry mode! How many endings are there? The game had HUGE build up toward that moment and the game kinda flopped on it. It's not saving the world, it's not breaking or reforming a legal system, it's just you trying to figure out what the hell happened and what you want to do about it. According to the press release, this first official expansion pack for the RPG sequel will contain everything one would expect - epic levels, new races, new classes, new monsters, new equipment, and a whole lot more. Some games manages to make it work, but most of the time it ends up pulling you out of the established atmosphere and feel of the game. That made me realize just what I was afflicted with: a cruel, punishing curse. Not a huge loss either way, and the joy/challenge of designing a high-level character from scratch is definitely something to experience at least once. right now I am half way into getting the "evil" ending. And I Must Scream: The Wall of the Faithless, though the souls there do eventually cease to exist - it's just that the process is lengthy and extremely painful. I feel like the OC does a great job of giving you the full gamut of a 1-20 experience with some really cool areas and encounters, especially in the latter part of the game. I really loved the game - It is ranked 3rd in my favorite RPGs (Torment 1st, KotOR2) - But I guess I am a sucker for more personal RPGs and somewhat disillusioned with SAVE THE WORLD plots. It also does something very few RPGs do - Connecting the story and your choices within it into more than just cutscenes, but into actual game-play. I didn't first play this till years after it came out. While not a true feast for the eyes, the game, The atmosphere. Ah, yes, the Astral Plane. What did it do well? What didn't it do well? Neverwinter Nights 2 MotB graphic and QoL mods Hi, from what I heard Mask of the Betrayer is one of the best rpgs ever produced, on par with Planescape Torment when it comes to the story. Like the first game, Mask of the Betrayer is set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of the paper and pencil role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and employs the 3.5 edition rules. Nostalgic, I was a big fan of ALL the neverwinter nights titles. The curse always plays a part in your interaction with NPCs and in combat as well. Lately I've been reminiscing a lot about my time with Mask of the Betrayer. Whereas in a traditional low-level D&D game, you'd be picking up a Halfing Rogue, Half-orc Barbarian, or a Human Bard as a teammate, in MotB, you can pick up a Half-Celestial Cleric, a powerful bear spirit, or a Red Wizard of Thay. To summarize, good game, even great at times. I don't seem to have gotten the hang of how to keep my spirit level high. I hate having any sort of a timer in a game. I've played through the OC like 4 times now with 4 different class builds, and I've yet to finish the MotB once. But after the first campaign where I worked my way up to having my own keep and a cool silver sword and a bunch of friends, I start this campaign. I loved the NWN and played it many, many times. The battle wasn't really epic, and imo they should've at least gave you the option to challenge the wall itself even if it ended in some kind of bad ending. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer Develo I feel like there's a Gann joke standing right there. t1con 13 years ago #1. DO. If the system in Mask of the Betrayer was used in Neverwinter Nights 2, Bishop probably would've been one of my closest companions. I like NWN. MUST. Suddenly all or most of my friends are dead, my sword is gone, my keep is gone, I'm in a strange land, I've lost everything I've earned, I'm now a soul sucking monster doomed to die (and having played this before I know there's no way to break the curse) and everyone hates and fears me. Welcome to our Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer walkthrough! Races III. Sadly, NWN 2 really dropped the ball when it comes to this visual detail. I really wish I could figure out what it is too, because I know a lot of people who enjoy it. Makes me spend more time and effort on the timer than having fun. The well-done epic level D&D. Turns out to be the final resting place of former Token Evil Teammate, Bishop. You do get treated like that at start, certainly. The only reason I played through NWN2 first was to brush up on my ruleset, but seeing as you've already played vanilla, that shouldn't be a problem. A hunger that turned me into a monster, needing to feed even on innocent benevolent spirits of the forest, just out of my selfish need to stay alive. But what truly made me realize how different this game was, was when I ran into a game mechanic I haven't run into in any non-roguelike ever: permadeath. Plus a bunch of quests are laugh-out-loud funny. For Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of The Betrayer on the PC, a GameFAQs message board topic titled "Holy hell this Spirit Eater thing is annoying". The fact that it has the best, most satisfying evil character gameplay/result I have ever seen in a videogame. The storyline and characters just don't feel exciting or engaging enough for me. For those complaining about the "hunger system", there was a way of disabling it using console commands. You dont have to force yourself to like it. That said.. MotB was good. Skills V. Feats VI. I enjoyed the next expansion more, despite it being strictly inferior in every other aspect. I hear nothing but good things about this game. I'm just wondering, since in my opinion it was a stroke of genius implemented in a fairly tedious way. I just wish they hadn't kept saying the word "mask" over and over. Completely amazing in terms of scope and wealth of D&D lore, particularly delving into the sub-plot revolving around the Dead Gods, and exploring some of the lesser traveled parts of the Forgotten Realms setting. Neverwinter Nights 2 has a fun story and all that, but the gameplay is kinda irritating compared to Infinity Engine games. Everything else I loved. The Cutscene Power trope has always been strong in RPG's, but this one time it felt like they actually inverted it - you're feeling the effects as much as you're supposed to, not just hearing how you should react to it. I totally agree. Buy it on eBay! The main downfall of the game for me, which it shares with KOTOR2 (Which is also Torment-esque) was the ending. The world, and all the details you can find about it. Both the fact that it was better compared to other content for this game and the fact that it came out in an RPG drought give me context to help me understand why people like this so much. If you've played through MOTB before and you didn't like it, then nothing I or anyone else says will change that. I really tried to get into vanilla NWN2, but for some reason it just felt very unpolished to me. The plot is interesting, tightly woven and full of hard questions. Are you better than your curse? Yet I've been unable to get it out of my mind, and that's typically the sign of a great game. Mask of the Betrayer character creation HELP!! It might be more accurate to say MotB is halfway decent compared to all the other campaign content for NWN(2), which was pretty bland. There's a thematic unity to Mask that you don't really see in other RPGs, and certainly not in the original NWN2 campaign. AND. SIDEQUEST. Good luck! When someone asks you how it feels being afflicted by the curse, you respond as if you are experiencing the negative side-effects of it - you aren't just roleplaying how your character should feel about it. It was released in Autumn 2007 for the PC in North America, Europe, and Australia. It was a huge disappointment for me. And Mask has such a great driving quest. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer by Lt. You lose your party members and a lot of your equipment when Mask starts, so I don't think you're missing much to just start a new character at level 18. I loved it. You can clearly see MotB really tried to be torment, of course it is very hard to live up to that, but it did an admirable try. EVERY. MotB is generally universally praised, just one of few such praised games that didn't do it for me. Exactly. I wish I had known that you don't have to feed on spirits all the time, but I found the hunger system intriguing but needless complex at best, and incredibly frustrating at worst. ), projectiles vanish on miss, characters don't flinch properly when hit, no reading from scrolls animation. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer (NWN2:MotB) is an expansion to Neverwinter Nights 2 developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Atari. I have always admired MotB for giving meaningful content for more than one play style instead of making the evil path "just like the good path only you killed all the rewards givers so you miss content." I only played maybe halfway through the first one and it's not very good, the graphics are very bad, the roleplaying aspect is lacking and most of the dialoge is in text. You're completely nuts, dude. Mask of the Betrayer offers up a deeper, darker, and ultimately more satisfying role-playing experience than Neverwinter Nights 2. Would it be better to play through the original and re-develop a character (and gather equipment) or can I just jump into MotB with a pre-generated high-level character without any problems? The most memorable moments for me were the surprise companion at the end of the bear barrow - I really did not expect it and I was delighted and it is at that moment that I knew I am going for a very enjoyable ride with the game. Credits XI. I love the ability to play almost any D&D race/class, to varying degrees of success. Fun fact, the narrator is the same guy who voices Squidward Tentacles. Some of the things that you are capable of doing later in the game go far, far beyond depravity (and there's no gory stuff at all). That helps. I had heard it mentioned alongside Planescape: Torment, one of my favorite games, several times, so I pretty excited about going into the game, with expectations so high I was almost sure to be disappointed. Even in the base campaign, there are distinct lawful/chaotic content divisions, but you have to save Neverwinter no matter what, and your final decision really only impacts the epilogue slides. I missed having a big party of companions, but Okku-or-One-of-Many are worth any three boilerplate Fighters. I love the OC despite some lol-worthy voice acting (to be fair it was a transitional era in many ways for VA), and a few tedious parts (late Act I). If you keep resisting you eventually get spells that you can use in the presence of spirits that satisfy your urges, but don't actually devour the spirits, and it gets to the point where you almost never have to do that. What can other RPG's learn from it? What people like about MOTB is simply how well it is made and how well it stands on its own, unlike the NWN2 OC which promised a spiritual successor of BG2 and delivered a mostly shallow, cookie cutter experience. Sample Builds VIII. If it's not an impending doom, threatening to end your game, how else could they convey that you're actually cursed and not blessed with "lol-I-can-suck-spirits-and-gain-bonuses"? ... There won't be any problem balance wise, and the stories aren't closely connected so there won't be a lot of "WTF?" Players are transported back to the Forgotten Realms shortly after the events detailed in the original Neverwinter Nights 2. Advertisement . There's no direct link between NWN2 and Mask of the Betrayer - in game-logic terms, they count as two entirely separate campaigns, even though you're supposed to play through one and then the other. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. I guess I am one of the few that actually liked the curse system - Much like you said, it gave a very real sense of impending doom and making the curse an actual curse, rather than the usual "Oh no, I have superpowers! I want to give it a go but as early 3d games tends to age quicker than their 2d counterparts, I am looking for some graphic update if there is some available. The Curse was a nuisance to manage (if you played with a Good Alignment), but it wasn't a tacked on mechanic because it tied into the story so well. I played the game as a lawful good character, meaning I tried to only feed when it was absolutely necessary. It takes nebulous, otherwise unexamined concepts in RPGs, like faith, the relationship between memory and existence, the purpose of divinity, the nature of metaphysics and sticks all of those things in a cauldron of real-world consequences. Both times I got to MotB, I dunno, something about it just didn't grip me at all and I stopped a handful of hours in each time. For many people, there's no contest. Introduction Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer is the first of what is likely to be a long list of expansion packs and adventure packs for Neverwinter Nights 2.Since it's an actual expansion pack, Mask of the Betrayer includes a whole host of additions: new classes, races, feats and spells, a higher level cap, subtle improvements to the interface, a 20+ hour campaign, and more. But after the first campaign where I worked my way up to having my own keep and a cool silver sword and a bunch of friends, I start this campaign. A lot of things which Neverwinter Nights 2 got wrong, Mask of the Betrayer nails precisely. Am I to understand that the character didn't do ANY feeding over that week? I wasn't a big fan of the lack of mobility they gave you in terms of alignment like what was stated previously in this post. Multi-classing VII. MotB was overall a great game. But the beautiful thing about this game is that you can forge your own path and the denizens of the world will take note. It restricted your decisions as certain Alignments, and it just felt like a cumbersome meter to pay attention to. Speaking of it, I feel the game really nailed down giving you enough information that every milestone is important and feels like an accomplishment rather than leading by the nose until the end before revealing what's the deal as the case with many other RPGs (Especially JRPGs). Both are equally viable. But, I've done both. But how do you think they could have made the curse actually feel like a curse then? It speaks volumes that I could never make progress with the evil path in this campaign. After I figured out that I was spending more time dealing with the asinine game mechanic, I just quit because it wasn't fun. I had just finished the original campaign of Neverwinter Nights 2 when I decided to give it a shot - seeing as you start at a relatively high level in MotB, I wanted to be sure my D&D knowledge was up to par. NWN2 and all its DLC comprises one of the most enjoyable rpg experiences ever made. Oddly, some of the things which NWN2 got right are where MoTB goes a little awry.
